This addition and renovation project is located in the scenic hills above Santa Barbara, California, offering breathtaking, uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean. The owner’s vision is to enhance the home’s connection to its surroundings by introducing more natural light into the living spaces, raising the original ceiling heights, expanding the bedrooms, and creating additional living areas above the garage to accommodate modern family living. Our team presented several options, ultimately settling on a design that minimizes disruptions to the original structure while delivering significant upgrades to the property. Despite the addition of a new level, the design thoughtfully incorporates minimal level changes, ensuring a comfortable and accessible living environment.

This 18,000-square-foot private estate in Rancho Mirage, California, showcases a thoughtful approach to estate architecture, blending practicality and beauty to meet the needs of a large multigenerational family. The design focuses on creating a livable, comfortable space by breaking the home into smaller, more manageable areas. These clusters of spaces are grouped together like a collection of small villages, naturally arranged around central gathering areas. This approach allows the family to connect in shared spaces while also providing the privacy and independence needed for daily living.

Inspired by the natural beauty of the Coachella Valley, the estate incorporates walls and forms that mimic the rugged rock formations found in the surrounding landscape. These elements help break down the scale of the property, making it feel more approachable while still maintaining its grandeur. Natural materials like stone, wood, and glass were chosen to harmonize with the desert environment, creating a timeless design that feels rooted in its surroundings.

At the heart of the estate are large gathering spaces designed for connection and relaxation. These areas feature fireplaces, interior water features, and expansive open layouts. Large sliding glass doors open directly to the pool area, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. This fluid connection allows the family to enjoy the desert climate year-round, whether they are lounging indoors or hosting events by the pool.

The outdoor spaces are as carefully considered as the interiors, offering a range of amenities that extend the home’s functionality. The expansive garden includes winding walking paths, inviting sitting areas, and zones for outdoor cooking and dining.
