Private Estate, Rancho Mirage, USA
Role: Architect of Record, Lead Designer
This 18,000-square-foot private estate design in Rancho Mirage, California, redefines luxury living for a multigenerational family. Organized as a series of interconnected structures, the residence balances grandeur with intimacy. Inspired by the natural beauty of the Coachella Valley, the design arranges clusters of living spaces like a collection of small villages, naturally grouped around central gathering areas. This thoughtful layout encourages both connection and privacy, making it ideal for family living.
Drawing on the rugged terrain of the surrounding desert, the architecture incorporates forms and materials that echo the region’s rock formations. Natural stone, wood, and glass create a timeless aesthetic that harmonizes with the environment while maintaining a sense of modern sophistication.
At the heart of the estate are open, expansive gathering spaces designed for relaxation and connection. Fireplaces, interior water features, and seamless transitions to the outdoor pool area highlight the integration of indoor and outdoor living. Large sliding glass doors dissolve boundaries, allowing the family to enjoy the desert climate year-round.
The outdoor spaces extend the functionality of the home, with winding garden paths, sitting areas, and zones for outdoor dining and cooking. A dedicated outdoor cinema offers an exceptional space for evening entertainment. Drought-resistant landscaping, featuring succulents, cacti, and native plants, enhances the connection between the estate and its natural surroundings while promoting sustainability.
The estate also incorporates spaces for recreation and reflection. A gym and sauna support wellness, a tennis court offers opportunities for active recreation, and a private chapel provides a quiet area for reflection or family celebrations. Two guest houses offer accommodations for visitors, ensuring comfort for extended stays.
Luxury and practicality converge in the estate’s two garages. One serves as a functional space for daily use, while the other is designed to showcase a collectible car collection. Glass walls in the display garage allow the collection to be admired from adjacent underground entertainment areas, designed for hosting and relaxation.
This private estate design demonstrates how architecture can blend luxury, livability, and respect for the surrounding environment. Through its integration of natural materials, thoughtful landscaping, and carefully considered spaces, it creates a residence where elegance meets functionality.
