Residential Renovation Planning for a Coachella Valley Home

This residential renovation planning project in Coachella Valley, Southern California, aimed to reinvent a four-bedroom, two-bath home with an attached garage. Originally built with limited internal efficiency and disjointed connections to its surroundings, the home had much potential but needed a complete transformation to truly harmonize with its environment and meet modern lifestyle standards.

One of the primary challenges was the home’s outdated floor plan, which lacked flow and functionality. The design team prioritized improving internal efficiency, seeking ways to open the layout without expanding the home’s footprint. The existing floor plan also failed to establish a meaningful connection between the indoor spaces and the scenic outdoors. The front yard offers remarkable views, yet the home’s only link to this space was through the front door. By redesigning this area, we created additional access points to the front yard, giving the owners greater enjoyment of the views and adding curb appeal.

In the back, a noisy air conditioning compressor limited the usability of the large backyard. The backyard’s potential was underutilized, and the new design reimagined it as a tranquil retreat. Given the popularity of pools in the area, the homeowners requested a pool addition to enhance property value and create a refreshing private oasis. Our team carefully placed the pool to maximize privacy, making it a central feature of the redesigned backyard.

Another critical issue was the mix of different window styles, installed over the years by previous owners. This mix-and-match approach detracted from the home’s aesthetic and made it inefficient. To improve energy efficiency and create visual cohesion, our team selected a uniform, high-performance glazing. This update provided a cohesive look to the exterior and significantly reduced energy costs, making the home more sustainable and comfortable.

Low ceilings in the living areas presented an additional challenge. To modernize the interior and increase vertical space, the homeowner asked for a new roofline that would open up the main living areas. The reimagined roofline not only met this request but also added a unique architectural character that sets the home apart in the neighborhood.
